(Back to top) SULFISOXAZOLE (Gantrisin®) is a sulfonamide antibiotic. Sulfisoxazole stops the growth of certain bacteria. It treats conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers and other superficial eye infections caused by these bacteria. Generic sulfisoxazole eye solution is not available. What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top) They need to know if you have any of these conditions: •an unusual or allergic reaction to 'sulfa drugs,' sulfite preservatives, furosemide or thiazide diuretics (water pills), oral diabetes medicines, or other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives •pregnant or trying to get pregnant •breast-feeding How should I use this medicine? (Back to top) Sulfisoxazole eye solution is for use in the eye only. Do not take by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Wash hands before and after use. Tilt your head back slightly and pull your lower eyelid down with your index finger to form a pouch. Try not to touch the tip of the dropper to your eye, fingertips, or any other surface. Squeeze the prescribed number of drops into the pouch. Close the eye gently to spread the drops. Your vision may blur for a few minutes. Use your doses at regular intervals. Do not use your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed. What if I miss a dose? (Back to top) If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses. What drug(s) may interact with sulfisoxazole? (Back to top) Do not use any other eye products without telling your prescriber or health care professional. Check before starting or stopping any of your medicines or non-prescription products. What side effects may I notice from using sulfisoxazole? (Back to top) Side effects with sulfisoxazole eye solution include: •blurred vision that does not go away •burning, stinging, or itching of the eyes or eyelids •redness, swelling, or pain Other side effects are possible but unlikely. If you get any sign of an allergic reaction, difficulty breathing, skin rash, urinary problems or severe diarrhea, call your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible. What should I watch for while taking sulfisoxazole? (Back to top) Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve in 2 to 3 days. If you get any sign of an allergic reaction, stop using your eye product and call your prescriber or health care professional for advice. If your eyes are more sensitive to light wear sunglasses. Keep out of the sun, or wear protective clothing outdoors and use a sunscreen. Do not use sun lamps or sun tanning beds or booths. Where can I keep my medicine? (Back to top) Keep out of the reach of children. Store at room temperature between 8 and 15 degrees C (46 and 59 degrees F). Do not freeze.
